Jay Hammond

Governor Jay Hammond served as the state’s fourth governor from 1974 to 1982. A former Marine pilot and bush pilot, Hammond was known for his rugged persona and deep love for Alaska’s wilderness. Before becoming governor, Jay Hammond played a significant role in the development of the Bristol Bay Borough, Alaska’s first organized borough. During his governorship, he played a pivotal role in shaping the state’s future, most notably through the creation of the Alaska Permanent Fund, which allocates a share of oil revenues for the long-term benefit of Alaskans. Hammond also championed responsible resource development and environmental conservation. His legacy is celebrated for balancing economic growth with the preservation of Alaska’s natural heritage, earning him lasting respect and admiration.
