COMMONWEALTH NORTH STUDY GROUP
UNIVERSITY OF ALASKA Its roles and responsibilities
Discussion Notes from meetings of
September 11, 2002
- Should we be creating informed questions vs. conclusions?
- The Study Group should be drafting practical responses to practical issues vs. coming up with a wish list.
- What are the major changing conditions in Alaska over the next 10-20 years?
- Stable Anchorage population with strong Mat/Su growth
- Increased Native enrollment
- Fiscal issues
- Urban concentration
- Higher Native birth rate: 8% of the population can become 30%
- ANWR
- Alternative delivery systems
- What is the universitys service role in the creative arts?
- Much discussion on the research/teaching balance
- Scholarship
- State needs
- Nations agenda: follow the money
- Campus by campus
- Student access to researchers -- the need for a learning environment
Need for additional information
- Campus-by-campus dollar breakdown of research vs. teaching
Possible findings
- Many things are going well at U of A
- At UAA one-half of teachers are part-time. Of the other one-half, only 5% of effort is in research
- Most of the research at U of A is in Fairbanks. However, most of the students are in the Anchorage area.
Possible recommendations
- Research: follow the money vs. a Study Group leaning to focus more on Alaska needs and value added to resources
- Continue and enhance efforts in outreach and marketing
- Need to look into alternative delivery systems (Mike Sfraga paper)
- The university and K-12 relationship needs to be outlined and an action plan developed
- U of A prepares educators
- Recruiting relationship with secondary schools
- Need to set and articulate standards
- Need for policy articulation
- Sponsored research is good -- engaging students is better
- This report will have a strong recommendation on the importance of teaching
- U of A needs a major dialogue on the importance of teaching
