Study Group Meeting Minutes 7 a.m., July 3, 2002 Northrim Bank Building, 5th Floor Conference Room Jon Kumin and Steve Rieger, co-chairs (Steve was out of town)
Introductions -- Those present include: Mike Burns, Milton Byrd, Thomas Case, Brian Davies, Charles Fahl, Cheryl Frasca, Jan Gehler, Duane Heyman, Ky Holland, Grant Hunter, Dave Kester, Nancy King, Jim Knapp, Grace Long, Cynthia Matson, Rachel Morse, Pat Pitney, David Rees, Jeff Staser, Niel Thomas
Discussion Points (went around the room getting status reports from each person)
- The state itself does not have a vision of where it wants to go, so it is hard for the U to fit into that
- Work still to be done on UAA/community college merger
- The CTC has a clear role
- Integrated with the employment community
- Education and training is not exclusive
- APIC is a success
- Emphasize the whole career pathway
- There is a sense of disconnect. U is trying to establish connections. Lack of community awareness. Needs to be a simple message. What shall the U NOT do? CWN should relate back what the U is not hearing.
- The "University" is really post-secondary education
- Potential cuts by the legislature can result from lack of support
- Need a mission and goal matrix. The study group needs more outside perspective
- The U is the only civilizing agency in our society. Make the U true to its central purpose. "Civilize the barbarians."
- The U is central to the future of Alaska
- "Born, bred, fled Alaskans" (Brain Drain)
- "All things to all people" -- impossible
- U has a broad public service mission. In that sense it is all things to all people. However, the U only offers 2/3 the courses of peer institutions.
- Differentiate lack of K-12 focus. Do not accept a standard of inadequacy. Do not do both jobs (remediation and education).
- Adding reform of K-12 to the U agenda further burdens it. Subject high schools to a rigorous curriculum. Each entity needs to do its own job.
- If a large % of students take developmental (remedial) classes, is the U doing its core job well?
- Educating students is the core.
- Has APU failed? There is a vastly changed profile of students. Traditional program thriving, but not all APU does. Will expand the dormitory. Also serves the adult population -- degree completion program thriving.
- Nationwide remediation is a big disaster. Must have a challenging core curriculum.
- MAJOR ISSUE: High school v. U remediation relationship
- MAJOR ISSUE: How much in/out of state flux is normal and healthy?
