Rural & Alternative Energy Study (Completed 2012)
Commonwealth North has begun our newest study on rural and alternative energy. This study will be chaired by Meera Kohler and Ethan Schutt. This is the continuation of an energy initiative by Commonwealth North to study the crucial energy issues in Alaska which began with the report “Energy for a Sustainable Alaska, the Railbelt Predicament” published March 2010.
The goal of this study is to develop an understanding of the current state of energy production, transportation and consumption in rural Alaska and to examine efforts underway to develop long-term, viable, cost-effective solutions to those challenges. This study will attempt to inform Alaskans about energy challenges that exist outside the railbelt and to develop recommendations on the most cost-effective solutions to provide for the long-term energy needs of rural Alaska.
