March 1991 Fire Island: A North Pacific Maritime Center A study of the viability of a major maritime center at Fire Island. The study concluded that a maritime center will attract new facilities and services which willstimulate industrial growth. 1. Alaska needs a port for the growing world of trade.
2. Industrial port activities need a new home.
3. The cost of building a causeway and port at Fire Island is estimated in the range of $226 million.
4. Fire Island is a natural deep water port that provides the best location in south-central Alaska for port expansion.
5. The economic benefits to the community and the state will be substantial.
1. New tourism, recreation, retail and light industrial businesses should move into the Ship Creek area.
2. There is an urgency for action now while the state can fund such a project that will return to the state many times its initial cost.
3. Financing for the project should be a joint venture between the public and private sectors.
