Executive Director's Report

A new year begins and it is time to do it all over again: get some new members, raise some more funding, have a lot of good programs for our members, and do an excellent study or two.  Commonwealth North is a membership organization, and I encourage each of you to invite someone to attend our events and join our organization: your friends, co-workers, dentist, banker, or anyone else that may have an interest in the future of Alaska and the policies that will affect this future. We have about 375 members, and I am sure there are many more Alaskans that would be interested in participating with Commonwealth North, if they knew about us.   So spread the word, ask people to check out our website or call us, bring someone to an event, don’t let us remain a well-kept Alaska secret.

After two years working for Commonwealth North, I am just beginning to understand the true value of this organization.  We provide a unique forum and service to the State, and I am proud to be associated with this effort.  We have a dedicated staff, involved and very active board of directors, and a diverse membership that shows its commitment through participation in study groups, committees, and programs.  Next week check out our website to see our 2007 Annual Report to get a better idea of what we have accomplished and then help us make 2008 an even better year.  See you at our annual meeting on January 24.

January Forum: “Managing Alaska's Assets” An annual examination of the performance of Alaska’s assets
Noon, Thursday, January 24, 2008, Anchorage Sheraton
As shareholders in “Alaska Inc.” the citizens of Alaska need to be informed about how the assets of the company are performing.  What do we have?  How are the assets being managed?  Are the assets performing as well as they could be?  Do changes need to be made?

Commonwealth North will begin an annual review to report on value, income, and prospects of Alaska’s key assets. A panel of the State's major asset managers will be asked to identify what criteria they should be judged upon and to identify emerging public policy issues related to the assets under their responsibility.  Ultimately, the program will serve to track performance of assets –and asset managers—against that criteria and other metrics.

This will be a very educational program on an important topic for all Alaskans.  This will also be the CWN Annual membership meeting and will include the distribution of the annual report and the announcement of election results.

February Forum: University of Alaska President Mark Hamilton
7a.m., Tuesday, February 12, 2008 Hotel Captain Cook
