Member Briefing
Was held Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2007
Hotel Captain Cook

The Pebble Mine project will be one of the largest gold and copper mines in the world with a 2-mile wide footprint. The project proponent, Northern Dynasty Mines is not only proposing a large open pit and underground mine, but also two large earthen dams on the North and South Fork of the Koktuli River at the headwaters of the Bristol Bay watershed. Because the site sits at the headwaters of two major Bristol Bay drainages, it has a potential impact to the region's fishing industry. This proposal will also have a large impact on the regional economy by providing thousands of jobs, and more than a billion dollars in capital investment.

As part three of Commonwealth North' two part series on the Pebble Project, Bruce Jenkins, the President of Northern Dynasty Mines, presented their position that the project can be developed “in a way that protects water, fisheries, wildlife, and other important values”.
